Artist Statement

This body of works speaks to my lived experience as a queer, bipolar, neurodivergent, woman living in America in late-stage capitalism. I explore themes of personal daily struggles, self-image, trauma and others’ people’s perceptions of non-normativity.

Neon demands perfection. Debris left in a tube can cause it to fail burn up and eventually stop working all together. I am drawn to the perfection of neon as a counterpoint to the messiness of the human experience, using Neon to express intense feelings and emotions; it is bold, powerful and impossible to ignore. Neon is my only constant, with other materials such as clay, paper, glass and found objects playing supporting roles chosen in service of the work. While Traditionally neon is used in signage to call attention to and sell a product my work uses neon as a siren, an agitator to call attention to an idea, ask questions and provoke conversation.
